Apple Turnovers

Image
Today we have a real special treat from Paula. I moved this up the queue simply because it is just delicious. She writes: This weekend I spent canning. I put up 75 jars of sweet pepper relish. It seems everyone with a garden felt the need to provide me with their green tomatoes. Of couse they will all receive a jar or two of relish. When all the green tomatoes were used, I was left with some red ones and decided , what the heck, may as well jar some marinara sauce. I should have closed my eyes and crawled from the kitchen but I realized, I still have apples needing to be cooked in some form. I think my family is tired of pies and cakes now so it’s on to apple turnovers. When I finished, all that was needed is someone to clean my kitchen. The floor is sticky, there are remnants of apples, tomatoes, peppers and such. It smells good, but, oh the mess… Apple Turnovers Ingredients For Pie Crust ( using as pastry crust for turnovers) 2 Cups Flour ½ Teaspoon Salt ½ Teaspoon Baking Powde...

Grandma (Bubby) Sarah's Gefilte Fish

Image
Grandma (Bubby) Sarah Video Series Of Passover Recipes Sometimes among the emails I receive I get a few gems. Today, one such gem from Michael Schreiber, Production Director of tv360.tv , which seems to be a new Internet startup (check it out), sent this one in. The videos are served from realmeals.tv (part of tv360.tv, which also owns realhealth.tv which is about healthy lifestyles and living.) I will quote from his email: Dear Fire in my kitchen, Last weekend I took my video camera and filmed a real bubby making her prized matzah ball soup... medium sinkers. Delicious... easy to replicate as you'll see in the video recipe. She also demonstrates gefilte fish... the mystery is finally revealed! Her potato kugel is great too. I made a short video recipe for each film, which you are welcome to post on your site if you like. So many of these old country recipes will disappear as these great people pass away. It's important that these recipes survive! Best, Mike I have gone th...

Dafina - Sephardi Cholent

Image
The following was sent in by a new contributor, Yaffa (from the USA). Because I really try and use the words of the author without changing anything when quoting your stories, I have to explain a few words and ideas here, (as Jews can be a terribly complicated bunch - especially when it comes to food!) I also will not alter your recipes except for spelling mistakes. Therefore this is NOT in the traditional way of presenting a recipe at Help! I Have A Fire In My Kitchen . However, since this is Yaffa's first, we are going to present it here as she wrote it and give her a bit of leeway! " Sephardi " refers to the cultural roots of many Jewish communities. As I linked this to Wikipedia, let us just quote a paragraph from there. A Sephardi is a Jew originating in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) , including the descendants of those subject to expulsion from Spain by order of the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella (as codified in the Alhambra decree of 1492),...

Walnut Graham Cake with Candied Walnut Glaze

Image
Shrugged really has gone and done it now! This is some recipe folks. Just don't get too scared! She writes: This sounds more difficult than it is, but it does take some work. However, the payoff is well worth the effort. This stuff is awesome. I made it for the first time a couple years ago, and it quickly became my husband's favorite cake. He even requests it for his birthday now. (Good thing we dispensed with putting candles on the adults' cakes, though. The glaze gets too hard to push a candle through.) Now, I know orange juice sounds weird in a graham cracker cake, but it's necessary. It gives it a special zest, and without it, the cake is a bit boring. Walnut Graham Cake with Candied Walnut Glaze Ingredients For Cake: 1 cup butter, softened 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar 3 eggs 1 cup orange juice 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup graham cracker crumbs 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup chopped walnuts Ingr...
