Introducing Paula's Great Mishkabobble Cookies

Image
There are a things we can learn from the following cookie recipe. Never have an early Sunday baseball game Never leave Paula alone with nothing to do in the kitchen Never leave too much in Paula's pantry Lock the Liquor cabinet! Paula loves Peanut Butter Paula writes: When the ballgame is played early on a Sunday, I am left with an afternoon of "what should I do?" Laundry pffft. I went for a walk and when I returned the kitchen called me. This was born today, and if I do say so myself, perhaps one of the best cookies I ever did create. I would have sent a picture had they not been eaten up before I could get the camera. These took less than ten minutes to prepare So what is mishkabobble? It is a hodgepodge of things, a mix-up, a kitchen sink - that combines everything together - and then voila Order from Madness. And so at Help! I Have A Fire In My Kitchen we are proud to be the first ones who can lay claim to: Introducing Paula's Mishkabobble Cookies Ingredient...

Pesto, Pistou...and some Olive Oil

Image
This is great for beginners and professionals alike. It is easy, adds to most meals, especially the spaghetti or pasta meals, and takes all of 10 minutes to prepare. The only thing is you have to remember to purchase the ingredients beforehand, but well worth the place for them on your shopping list. Yesterday, after my late afternoon daily run in Valley of the Cross, I came home full of sweat and endorphins while Rainbow, my Golden Retriever was totally out of it, as I had added a bit to the run. After awhile of course, my stomach went into high gear screaming out, "feed me, feed me". Now I will admit swimming laps makes you want to eat a horse, but running also sets in motion that "hunger bell", albeit on a lower sensitivity level. So after showering, I began to scrounge in the fridge. It was just me and I wanted nothing fancy. I was about to gravitate to my favorite meal in the whole world, which is tuna with mayo and some cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce (no brea...

Raspberry Shortbread Thumb-Print Cookies

Image
Man oh Man...Paula is driving me crazy for cookies! Getting out the Oreo's! Since I’m on a cookie kick.. here is another favorite of mine. During the holidays I make all different kinds of cookies and make trays up for people.. These never really make it onto the tray. They get eaten up too quickly. I prefer them without the glaze but if you tend to like a sweeter taste, use the glaze. Raspberry Shortbread Thumb-Print Cookies Ingredients: 1 Cup of Butter (2 sticks) Softened ( you can replace with margarine) 2/3 Cup Sugar ( I use powdered sugar instead of granulated) 1/2 Teaspoon Almond Extract 2 Cups Flour 1/2 Cup Raspberry Jam (or preserves, not jelly as jelly melts down to liquid) Ingredients For Glaze: 1 Cup Powdered Sugar 1 ½ Teaspoons Almond Extract 2-3 Teaspoons Water Variations: Powdered Sugar in the dough (makes a smoother dough , in my opinion) Boysenberry Jam Blueberry Jam Strawberry Jam Serve without glaze. Utensils You Need: Electric Mixer Large Bowl Small bowl (for ...

Italian Cookies

Image
When Paula makes cookies - Man does she make cookies! She writes: Cookies.. my favorite indulgence.. keep the chocolate, keep the pies and cake but you better hide the cookies. My idea of the perfect dessert is a variety of them. This looks difficult but honestly, it is easy and delicious. Italian Cookies Ingredients: 5 1/2 Cups Flour 1 1/4 Cup Sugar 4 Large Eggs, Separated, beat the yolks (reserve the whites) 2 Cups Butter or Margarine 1 Ounce Whiskey ***Zest of 1 Lemon Confectioner’s Sugar for dusting ***Lemon Zest is the outermost part of the rind of an orange, lemon, or other citrus fruit, used as flavoring. On a lemon, it is the yellow part of the peel on the outside of a lemon. It has an intense lemon/citrus flavor with very little bitterness. The bitterness is primarily found in the white part of the lemon. When removing the skin from lemons or other citrus fruits, be sure to take only the thin outer zest or colored portion. The white pith will give your dish a bitter underta...

Paula thinks we are going to give her a one-star here for difficulty...shhh...let us see how well she did with this recipe. She also gives us a personal view of her insane kitchen and cooking methods. Well here is what the insane cook sent Help! I Have A Fire In My Kitchen this time and once again we enter our Pie Fight! Paula Writes: Kids In The Kitchen While I’m packing up my kitchen for the upcoming move, I have come across many things that made me smile at the memories. I have 1 daughter, 12 nephews, 1 niece, 2 great nephews and a great niece. I won’t bore you with all of them, but I wish to share just a few special stories. A few things to keep in mind when allowing your children to help in the kitchen. 1) There will be a much larger mess to clean up in the end, but the bonding will more than make up for it. 2) You will be giving your child/children skills to survive on as they grow 3) You will create some very interesting dishes and feel giddy when you actually like them 4) T...

Fruit Salad

Image
Paula Writes: With the change of seasons, I prepare things that move outdoors well. My insanity continues to the outside world where it is me and my two grills and lots of hungry sisters and children. This makes a large fruit salad, but by the end of the day, it is gone. I leave a stack of plastic cups on the table so the kiddies can help themselves while the adults relax until I squirt them with my water pistol… which the kids love. Of course at the end of the day, I have found grapes floating in the pool and an odd piece of discarded fruit but it is a big hit. You can fancy this up when serving for a more formal get together by setting individual dishes and garnish with a mint sprig. Fruit Salad You will need: 1 Large bowl 1 Medium Bowl 1 cutting board 1 great knife Variations: You can add or subtract any fruit according to your taste Fruit Salad with Topping Ingredients: Pineapple, peeled and sliced into rings 3 Oranges, with or without the rind, sliced thin 3 Apples, with or...

No-Bake Chocolate "Mousse" Pie

Image
Kali submitted another one. This time a PIE! (Paula WATCH OUT!) I'm glad you liked the beef and cabbage soup recipe. A lot of my recipes definitely are not kosher, I like ham and I like cream of something soups with some of my meat dishes. But I noticed you don't have very many pie recipes, so I thought you might like this one. It's definitely dairy. About 30 odd years ago my grandmother attended a luncheon where the hostess served a very light and delicious chocolate pie for dessert. Helen was happy to share the recipe... no baking and only three (3) ingredients!! now how simple can you get?!? I was living with my grandparents at the time, so a few days later Grandmom and I decided to make the pie. Oh dear!! We ended up with chocolate soup pie! Fortunately, a few hours in the freezer got the "soup" to "set", but although it tasted just fine, it was missing the light texture it was meant to have. I realized that one rather key step had been omi...

Four-Layer Strawberry Torte, AKA Wimbledon Fortnight Cake - Cake Recipe Contest

Image
The Great Cake Recipe Contest - Submission # 10 Lori @ Camera Obscura Writes: My mother started making this cake when I was young. I have no idea where she got the "recipe", probably from some women's magazine. It quickly became my favorite and since strawberries came into season right around my birthday in our part of the U.S. (this is a long time ago) I started demanding it as my birthday cake. Now in the U.S. we can get strawberries year-round as long as we are willing to pay the price. In the 90s our family moved to the U.K. for a year while my husband was on a temporary assignment with the DoD. His office had "cake day" once a month, where one member of the group provides a cake for everyone to enjoy, and there was a bit of one-ups-manship involved. My husband's turn came right around Wimbledon fortnight when the strawberries are in season in the U.K., so I decided to make this cake, which in the U.S. is very easy. Alas, but in the U.K. cake mixes are ...

The Cake For Any Occasion - Cake Recipe Contest

Image
The Great Cake Recipe Contest - Submission # 1 Submitted By Paula - She Writes: This cake is a "For Any Occasion that comes up" recipe. It is expected at every birthday, anniversary, new baby, graduation, etc in my family. As I have mentioned in some of my submissions, my mother and grandmother are very bland cooks. However, one of my great, great aunts was said to have a way with food. Legend of the Ryan family, Aunt Kate cooked the "Sunday" family dinner each week and the extended families would gather at her table. I never had the honor of experiencing her cooking but I have had the ultimate compliment paid to me on many occasions by those who have. Many times the older relatives will say "You cook just like Aunt Kate". I usually end up catering most family functions because I am the only one who truly enjoys cooking and I never tire of hearing the comparison. She had a plaque hanging in her kitchen with the following blessing: May there always be roo...
